Perhaps no right in the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) has been more controversial in the United Kingdom than the right to privacy.
In a screening of 'The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies' at the Regent Street Cinema on May 31 (17:45), our 'Knowing Our Rights' research project will explore the key reasons for this conflict, providing a disturbing illustration of the horrific consequences that derive from invasions of the right to privacy by the press.
Based on the arrest and trial-by-newspaper of retired Bristol schoolteacher Christopher Jefferies after his tenant was found murdered, this is an almost Kafka-esque story of abuse of power by both the police and the very institution supposed to protect people from such treatment – namely the press.
The film will be introduced by Christopher Jefferies himself, and followed by an opportunity to discuss the human rights issues raised by the film with its subject, the producer, director, Brian Cathcart from Hacked Off and Julian Petley from the Knowing our Rights project at Brunel University London.
