Theresa May missed an opportunity to unilaterally recognise the rights of EU citizens in post Brexit Britain, and win European hearts and minds in the forthcoming Brexit negotiations, argued BiE director, Dr Dimitrios Giannoulopoulos, in the BiE public debate on 'Immigration after Brexit' on December 8.

In the same event, two Brunel Law School students, Martina Caloi and Natalie Canning, expressed their concern about the existing uncertainty in this area.

Jonathan Portes, Research Fellow at the National Institute of Economic & Social Research, and the key speaker in the debate, focussed on the huge logistical considerations involved in fully recognising the rights of EU citizens. The process will be very complicated and will take years, and a lot of people will fall on the wrong side of the line, he concluded.
